The popular Desert Festival is a journey into the heart of the desert, the golden city of Jaisalmer which coincides with the full moon in February. For three days, the otherwise barren land of Jaisalmer comes alive and is clustered with hordes of colourfully dressed people. Desert Festival is the time when the deserts of Rajasthan echoes with melodious tunes and swirling dances which attracts tourists from world over. It is an important event in the annual calendar of Rajasthan which gets to showcase its rich art and culture in the Desert Festival, Jaisalmer. Turban tying competitions, song and dance, exquisite fireworks and the performance of the folk artistes on a full moon night in the sand dunes of Jaisalmer is a lifetime event which you would not want to miss.

The local girls dressed up in heavy Rajasthani jewellery swirls and swings to the melodious folk tunes and the reverberates through the acres of sand dunes casting a magical spell on the visitors. Amidst the cold nip in the air, on a full moon night experience the heart touching folk tunes of Rajasthan, which will surely be a fascinating experience. The heart rendering soulful ballads of the erstwhile kings and royalty will remind you of the valor, love and painful stories of the Rajputs.

Crafts bazaars are also a major attraction for all you shoppers out there. If you wish to buy the handicrafts of Rajasthan you can drop into a few of these shops and appreciate the exquisite artwork of Jaisalmer and even take a few of them back home. Then comes the search for Maru-Shri or Mr. Desert and the deserving candidate surely wins competing with the rest. The desert contests show the vigour with which the locals participate and reflect the warmth and passion of the people of Rajasthan. There are exciting camel dances, camel acrobatics, camel races, and camel polo, competitions for the best decorated camel and tug-of-war between musclemen. The culmination is a sound and light spectacle on a moonlit night amidst sand dunes.

One can enjoy the pleasure of the camel ride on a trip to the sand dunes at Sam. All arrangements are made by the Department of Tourism and RTDC. The festival ends with a sound and light event, fireworks and the exclusive performance of folk songs and dances in the sand dunes of Jaisalmer under a full moon night sky.
