Christmas Festival in Rajasthan
Home >> Rajasthan Fairs and Festivals >> Christmas Festival in Rajasthan

Christmas is the time when the nature welcomes you. The heart burnt leaves fall on the ground only to open the doors to usher in the grandest of all celebrations in Rajasthan. Yes, it is Christmas, the festival that marks the birth of lord Jesus on the mist clad day of 25th December every year. People of Rajasthan celebrate several fairs and festivals with a lot of zeal and fervor. In the register of the Fairs and Festivals of Rajasthan, India, an important event is Christmas. This winter festival give the desert people a chance to get a break from their monotonous routine of life and make merry.

The word Christmas comes from the words Cristes maesse, or "Christ`s Mass." Historians claim that the first celebration of Christmas happened in Rome in 336 A.D. Early Romans, however, could not profess their religion openly as Christianity had grown up in blood and tears in Rome. It was only after the conversion of Emperor Constantine to Christianity in 4th century A.D that the religion came to be followed by vast masses of humanity. This community then felt the need to celebrate the birth of Christ as a festival.

But different groups had been celebrating Jesus's birth on different dates like 6th January, 19th April, 20th May, 17th November, and 25th December. By the 5th century A.D. 25th December got accepted as the most suitable date in the Western World and gradually the Eastern Churches fell in line with the west.

Besides, traditionally the middle of winter has long been a time of celebration around the world. Even before the arrival of Jesus, many peoples rejoiced during the winter solstice, when the worst of the winter was behind them and they could look forward to longer days and extended hours of sunlight.

Like other Hindu Festivals of India, you will find a merry air replete with festivity when you watch the people of Rajasthan celebrating Christmas. Shops and homes take on a festive air. Streets and markets go gay with festival wares. Dances, songs, Christmas trees, Santa Claus moving through the streets with his glittering colorful robes, glowing long white beard and shaking hand with children in the streets form the main attraction of this festival. Families get together around sparkling Christmas trees from whose branches hang numerous lovely gifts. Christmas raises everyone's spirit. It is a hue of joy, celebration and festivity. Exchanging cards has also become a very important part of the festivities. Besides markets are flooded with a lot of decorative items on the day. People of all ages look forward to Christmas holidays with lot of zeal.
Christmas celebrations vary in different parts of Rajasthan. In some parts, small clay oil-burning lamps, mango leaves etc are used as Christmas decorations and mango and banana trees are decorated. All the major Indian cities wear a festive look. Shops and bazaars are decorated for the occasion and offer attractive bargains.
The Christmas festival is celebrated between the December 24th to January 1, the New Year day.
